Playing with my Food

This weekend we tested out a new recipe!  Originally found online this is a real dinner recipe, not yet another baking recipe (I can't live off cupcakes - well I could but it wouldn't end well...)

The recipe started out as a Heirloom Tomato and Caramelized Onion Tart with a Whole Wheat and Olive Oil Crust but then some clutch 'adjustments' had to be made while grocery shopping.

The lovely photo and recipe from Tarte du Jour
The main adjustments we made:
1. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find heirloom tomatoes at the grocery store so I had to substitute them for plane jane 'on the vine' tomatoes.

2. I couldn't find Gruyere cheese at the grocery store so I picked up some white cheddar (only to find the Gruyere on my next visit - I felt a little silly).

3. We didn't have whole wheat flour on hand at the time so we used regular all purpose (I know, I know whole wheat is healthier - next time I'll make sure we have some.)

Overall it turned out really good and I have to pass any credit along to my boyfriend who did a great job. The only thing I think I would have done different is add more tomatoes - but it comes down to preference. I love tomatoes, the boyfriend does not, so I am just happy he compromised on this recipe.

I think I'll keep an eye open at the local  Farmer's Market for heirloom tomatoes and try the recipe again in the summer. It reminded me a bit of quiche and would be really good for brunch too!

On a related note, we've been playing around with quinoa lately - it is so good! I was a tad hesitant at first but it's like cooking rice. I love it cooked in a salad with some chopped cucumber, tomato, red pepper, green onion, and a little lime juice, olive oil, and seasoning. You can also chop and cook up some yam and add it in. So good!

Enjoy!
