Darling Little Frenchies

This weekend I had the pleasure of photographing my friend Jen's two French Bulldogs. Bella and Ruby were as adorable as expected and the weather outside was perfect for a couple hours of playing, belly rubs, and kisses.

In addition to being a blast, the photo session also allowed me to cross something off my bucket list! Remember this little post? Well... number 20 is a wish to one day photograph a "client" and, since Jen isn't a relative and doesn't have to love me or my pictures, I'm counting her as my first and best client ever!

Although she didn't have to love the photos (the opportunity to act like a real photographer for a bit would have been enough) I'm told she does which makes me grin from ear to ear...

Enjoy!

Fall Means New Clothes

Ok, so I know that I'm not necessarily the 'target market' for back to school advertisements (I've been out of school for a few years) but that still doesn't stop me from getting excited for new fall clothes.

September always feels like the beginning of the year - I don't know if that will ever go away - and it makes me want to spruce up my wardrobe, change my hairstyle, and get back on the exercise wagon. Fall is also my favorite season. I love dressing in layers, perfect for our crisp mornings and warmer days.

Although I'm not overly trendy when it comes to my wardrobe (a belted cardigan is about as risky as I get) I've added leggings and skinny jeans with boots to my shopping list this year. Im trying to take some more risks but always seem to revert back to my comfort zone -ballet flats, dark denim, and bright sweaters.

I tried on a pair of skinny jeans last week and they didn't look as horrible as I had expected - I see some dark ones like this in my future. Also, coral pieces like this cardigan are a must!

The mix of dark denim, chocolate boots, plaid, and chunky sweater makes for a perfect casual and cozy outfit.

I love the leggins and yellow boots! A longer wrap sweater is a must for winter - I think I could make this work for work...

via Pinterest

Love, love, love this outfit! Cropped demin, a little sparkle on the tank, and a yellow cardigan! Add in a quiet hour with some tea and you've got the perfect Sunday morning!

I love this creamy belted cardigan and the brown leather belt is fantastic. The perfect outfit for in-between fall days that are still a bit warm.

via Pinterest

My usual go-to pants are boot cut, denim, and dark. I really like the slouchy layered top and small leather belt.
via Pinterest

This green coat is an attention grabber! The white top and dark jeans don't take away from the coat but also have enough detail to work on their own.

Change isn't so hard...

Notice anything new?

I was growing a little tired of the dark gray so...

There may be more change on the way. Especially if I ever learn how to make a header or write HTML.

PS - Thanks to Shabby Blogs for the lovely header template!

Until then, enjoy the white and a bit of colour!

Endless Summer

Labour Day weekend has always been a bittersweet time of year - the end of summer but beginning of something new and exciting (although I haven't gone back to school in a few years).

via Pinterest
Each year I have so many plans for the summer and before I know it the end of August is here, my plans have fallen to the side, and I feel a little deflated that I didn't accomplish very much.

A Bit of Brilliance - Mellow Yellow

Oh the days are getting shorter... It's sad but also exciting in a way; fall is my favorite season! There's just something about crisp mornings, sunny days, and dressing in layers that does it for me...

Fall has great colours too... crimson red, burnt orange, and mustard yellow (my favorite!). I really don't have much yellow in my home or wardrobe but I think it's time for a change.

This little yellow coat is so chic - I love the exaggerated pockets. The leather gloves and bag and cute bob hairstyle take it to a whole other level!

via Pinterest

This wall art adds a great punch of colour and I really love the graphic quality and extra large size.

via Pinterest

Gray and yellow has to be one of my favorite colour pallets. This sliding barn door in bright lemon yellow is really fantastic...

via Pinterest

Lemon poppy seed cupcakes sound delicious and look too cute in tiny paper condiment cups with a dollop of icing.

Oh Greece - one day we will be together and then, everything in the world will be right and perfect...

Eatin' My Feelings...

Work has been extremely busy lately and the little free time I have in the evenings seems to evaporate before my eyes. When I'm living at the office, my house is a disaster, and I can't tell which clothes are clean and which are dirty, I tend to get a tad bit cranky/overwhelmed/depressed... surprise!

I am also an emotional eater (Who's with me!?!) Sooooo add this to my current lifestyle and I'm thinking of food 99% of the time...

These recipes look and sound amazing, if only I had some time to cook. Enjoy the food porn!

Lemon orzo w/ grape tomato and asparagus

French toast bundt cake

Loaded Potato Soup

Black tea and blackberry sorbet

Peach crunch cake

Hey Girl,

It's my party and I'll stare at Ryan Gosling if I want to...

Yes, I may still be going on about reaching the 6 month marker - until I come back down to Earth here's some Ryan to brighten your day...

This website makes me laugh and laugh - I've discovered that things like this are important little gems to hold onto, after all, you never know when you'll need a good chuckle!

via F-ckYeah! Ryan Gosling

I love it! I can't stop thinking of my own...

Hey Girl, Are you still thinking of the Dirty Dancing lift I did in that movie one time... yeah, me too.

Common, I can't be the only one who would totally flip at the first offer of a foot massage, some spooning, or the chance to replay the most iconic cinematic dance sequence ever...

It's a Good, Good Day

Guess what!?!

I don't want to brag but... It's my 6 month blog-aversity!

via Pinterest

I can't believe it either - 6 whole months? Clearly that can't be right, after all my math HAS been wrong plenty of times before, but no, it has in fact been 181 days of blogging glory!

And the entire time I have loved to have a little piece of the internet to call my own. A little haven to fill with beautiful things, a spot to share my opinions, a chance to step into the spotlight and blabber on and on...

If you've been here since the first few days, Thank-you!

If you've taken the time to make a comment, good or bad, Thank-you!

If you've stumbled here accidentally but stayed long enough to read a few lines, Thank-you!

And, in general, THANK YOU! to everyone, for everything, because this makes me happier than almost anything else in a long, long time!

A Bit of Brilliance - Jon Hamm is a God!

These are some of the cutest cupcakes I've ever seen! Layered in shot glasses and topped with sprinkles and a big 'ol gumball, they are so colourful!

via Pinterest

This storage stand uses metal cake pans to hold random craft nick-nacks. Although I'm not one for a lot of clutter this is really cute and could work on a crafting table.

via Pinterest

I can always find glorious maxi dresses online - but whenever I try them on in the store they don't work... The flutter sleeves on this dress and deep v-neck are amazing!

via Pinterest

This room does it for me! The bright Beatles-esque art, wide plank wood floors and tulip dining set. Seriously, I love tulip tables and chairs. If I ever win the lottery...

via Pinterest

I love everything about Mad Men - the sets, styles, characters, story... Jon Hamm is a beautiful, beautiful man but January Jones is owning this shot!

I Love Dexter!

I don't have cable. Not because I don't like tv, I can get caught watching something stupid with the best of them (think Jersey Shore or Entertainment Tonight). I don't have cable because I'm cheap. I've learned to find the shows I like online or buy DVD box sets (on sale!) and although that means I'm behind a bit it's ok, because in the summer, when nothing but crap is on tv, I've got Damages, Mad Men, or something else fabulous to watch.

Right now I'm having a mini Dexter marathon, trying to catch up on Season 4. I know I've posted this before but I am in love (love! love! love!) with these Ty Mattson prints and want one sooooooooo bad!

I've tried to purchase one (or two...) on numerous occasions but there are always problems with the Showtime website. First they didn't ship to Canada and then there was an issue with the terms and conditions...

But, the website has underestimated just how stubborn I can be - I wont give up until one of these beauts is framed and leaned against my wall in a very chic and modern way!

Enjoy!

Peach Perfection

Last year my boyfriend got a job at an agricultural research centre in the Okanagan where they study, among other things, cherries, peaches, grapes, and plums.

Turns out, the excess fruit they didn't need for experiments could be taken home - for free! Needless to say we were inundated with crates of fruit, not that I complained! After eating all we could of the fresh stuff we needed to do something with the leftovers - we froze the berries for winter smoothies, made and froze countless cherry pies, and did our own experiments with some new recipes online.

I found this recipe for Peach Muffins and after one bite I knew it was a keeper. The big chunks of peaches make the muffins really moist and tasty and the strudel style topping adds some great crunch!

This past week I made them again but with a bit of a twist... because I was running out to the lake and had to pick peaches up on the way I combined the dry ingredients in a glass bowl with rubber lid and the topping in another small container. Then, I packed them up and took them with me to make later. Because the wet ingredients are common I was able to find them around the cabin to whip up a batch the next day after buying some peaches.

Peach Pecan Muffins via About.com

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter melted
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
2 medium peaches peeled, diced (about 1 cup diced)

Topping
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/3 cup brown sugar packed
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons melted butter

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease and flour 12 muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners. Combine topping ingredients until mixture is crumbly; set aside.

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk together butter, milk, and egg in a separate bowl. Stir milk/egg mixture into the flour mixture and blend just until moistened.

Fold in diced peaches. Spoon into muffin cups; sprinkle evenly with topping mixture.Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from pan.

Outdoor Shower

Almost every summer memory of my childhood is from the lake. Growing up I was lucky enough to spend the entire summer at Shuswap Lake - swimming, building sand marinas (no castles here), and relying on my imagination to create fairytale lands in the vacant lot next door. Only now do I realize how lucky my mom was as well - oh to trade in my day job for three months in the sun making sure sunburns, duck itch, and scrapes are attended to.

Initially we had a small travel trailer (with power, we were so lucky!) and then upgraded to a large covered deck and running water (via a garden hose hooked up to our neighbour's house). Although not completely roughing it, we did bathe in the lake and rely on an outhouse* until just recently.

*I outfitted the outhouse with movie posters - John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in Greece greeted you upon entry...

Past the tubers, you can see out little trailer on the left behind the trees

And then everything changed... Two years ago we decided it was time to build a cabin on the property. Goodbye little trailer containing so many memories, hello big changes that at times hurt my heart; The entire lake has changed - not always for the better.

The cabin was supposed to be small, unlike some of the gargantuan estates that dot the shoreline. However, a small living space over a garage quickly morphed into a loft-like space with an attached outdoor kitchen. We've been slowly making progress between days of relaxation in the summer, utilizing my brother's electrical background and many of his friends that work in the trades.

And now, we have running water, a flush toilet and fully functioning shower - no need to bathe in the lake although my brother and I are still doing so in protest. The cabin is wonderful, a natural progression that will work well as my brother and I start to have our own families (that is, if my mom has her way...).

Now, an outdoor shower is in the works. I'm in love with the open roofed, tropical dream spaces found at swanky four star resorts - ours on the other hand will be more one or two star. We've talked about a curved rock wall and the need for a roof to accommodate our less-than-tropical weather. Here are a few that I've pulled off the internet, although a bit fancy, they have some great features that could work for us...

I love, love, love this slate which is run up and down in a super modern pattern.

Outdoor Shower

This shower is great because of the large amount of natural light. I really like the gap between the high ceiling and less high walls.

outdoor shower

A curved wall - what a great idea! The tones in the dark rock here are great and again, the walls are just high enough for privacy but don't go right up to the ceiling, letting in a ton of light.

outdoor shower

This shower is a bit dark (may just be the picture...) but I really love the extra large glass doors that open up to make it feel open. The wood floor is pretty great too.

outdoor shower
I promise to keep you posted if/when anything progresses - we'll see if any of these ideas can be worked into the plan...

Enjoy!

Bananas and Pyjamas - Banana Bread for Breakfast

I made this kick-ass Chocolate Chip Banana Bread about a month ago and took a piece into work for a couple self-declared Banana Bread experts. I was happy when they said it was one of the best they've had but any credit is definitely owed to the recipe and not the chef.

I like Banana's but once they get over-ripe I can't handle them and into the freezer they go to be used in a recipe later on...

So, with some vacation time last week I decided to use up the bananas in the freezer and figured that banana bread for breakfast at the lake (along with a chai tea) would be perfect!

This recipe if from Martha Stewart (what a genius). I don't always have a full 3 cups of banana's but have found it isn't necessary and have substituted a bit of yogurt in the past. I also use chocolate chips instead of walnuts because, lets be honest, it just isn't the same without chocolate...

Banana Bread via Martha Stewart

Ingredients:

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pan
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 cups sugar
3 large eggs
3 cups mashed medium very ripe bananas (about 6)
1 cup chopped toasted walnuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5-by-3-inch (2-quart) loaf pan; set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda; set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. With mixer on low speed, add flour mixture in three additions, alternating with two additions of banana; mix until just combined. Stir in walnuts, if desired, by hand.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out with only a few moist crumbs attached, 60 to 70 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes in pan, then turn out of pan and let cool completely on a wire rack.
Note: I normally tent the pan part way through the cooking process once the edges get brown so it doesn't overcook on top. That way you can avoid the undercooked middle that sometimes happens.
Enjoy!

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

I tend to get cranky when I don't feel productive so I decided to use my first official vacation to cross a few items off my to-do list.

I started in the garage, packing up the tent I used two weeks ago (yes, I'm ashamed), sorting our cans and bottles for recycling, and taking out the garbage. I then moved inside and put away all the shoes that had migrated to our tiny entrance.

My main job for the day was our spare room - where everything seems to go to die. It's too embarrassing to show you the before picture so here's one after a couple hours (like tidying up for the cleaning lady...)

I had a huge oak dresser that was taking up way too much space - once I shimmied it out of the way I had room for a side table, lamp, and chair (don't worry, I'll wait for a strong man before moving the dresser downstairs!).

My favorite thing about the room right now is a little wooden fruit crate under the purple side table. I filled it with tins that hold pencil crayons, paint brushes, and markers for a big punch of colour!

This room still needs a lot of TLC - paint, headboard, curtains, art... but at least it's cleaner and I've purged a ton of stuff!

After so much purging I got stuck so I moved along to my master bedroom. Between weekends camping I've been working a lot and neglecting my house - it looked like a clothes hoarder had moved into a corner in my bedroom...

It's shameful but would you believe how bad it was without the picture? After loads of laundry, making the bed, and vacuuming, I finally got some art hung! These pictures have been leaning against my walls for MONTHS so I'm so excited that they are up and out of the way!

To prove that I didn't just shove everything in my closet I left the mirrored doors open for the after pics... I hung my handmade butterfly art between the closets and two framed photographs above the bed. There is just something about art and plants that transform a room...

To finish things off I hung a clock in my master bathroom - a necessity while I get ready in the mornings! My friend Andrea gave me this kick-ass clock, for no other reason than she's sweet like that... I had a simple clock that was an option too but a quick comparison made the decision easy.

Now I just need to find 12 black and white photos to fill the colourful frames of the clock...

Enjoy!
